Vaginas everywhere: “Caveat Emptor” … for your good health and well-being!
Seriously, who the hell is looking out for the health and well-being of vaginas, specifically yours? Sure there are OYBN’s everywhere but they are only as effective as the number of people who go see them and ask the right questions. Even then, some are pretty damn limited in providing in depth knowledge and advice (see doctor’s opinion in Article #2: He knows nothing but says, “… she should give it a try.”)
It’s definitely, “caveat emptor!”
“They’re preying on young women who are in pain and looking for a solution.”
Here are two articles that exemplify the risks to women when it comes to the swamp of advice on what to insert, and not insert, in your most precious and private asset. So many choices, so little knowledge.
- Article #1: “I Tried Putting a Weed Product in My Vagina to Help with Period Cramps” [Comment: With cannabis legal in Canada there is potential for widespread misuse. Canadian women need to be well-informed. Because as this article points out, “it has not been clinically studied in women yet.” Yikes!]
- Article #2: “This Tiny Period Cramp Device Is Scamming Women Out of Money” [Comment: Dr. Jen Gunter says this device is “okay,” and she knows a thing or two about vaginas. See our book review of her latest book, “The Vagina Bible”]
These articles suggest that both these “devices” can work for women but upon close reading you can see how random, and with limited scientific proof, these “recommended” products are. Of course, there are so many more that are sold by snake-oil companies and celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and her Goop empire (see previous articles).
Read and learn but then be your own best advisor – after all, you are the owner and guardian of your vaginal health. And as these articles highlight, reliable, proof-based knowledge is conspicuous by its absence.
The bestselling book, Woman by Natalie Angier, published 20 years ago, has stood the test of time and is a valuable resource for all women interested in truly knowing their own body. Well worth having on your bookshelf. Available in Love & Sexcess Bookstore (25% off).
