In honor of masturbation, we honor …

the passing of renowned ‘solo sex’ advocate, pro-sex feminist, sex educator Betty Dodson (1929-2020)

“A real orgasm is something that no matter where it comes from, a woman takes for herself.” – Betty Dodson

Betty Dodson took the shame and guilt out of masturbation – ‘solo sex’ and ‘self-love’ – and wrote a taboo shattering guide, Sex for One: The Joy of  Self-Loving, that shed light on masturbation as a wonderful and essential form of sexual expression. To place her honesty and boldness in perspective, the book was first published in 1987.

Betty Dodson passed away October 31, 2020 at the age of 91.

The New York Times did an excellent article on Betty in March 2020 in which her tell-it-like-it-is attitude is as bold and beautiful as when she was setting the culture of the 1970s on fire pronouncements like “Get ’em to do what you want … Get the position you want.” She monogrammed her bathrobe with her initials, B.A.D. – Betty Anne Dodson.

Every woman owes her a modicum of gratitude. And every woman should read her books: Bodysex Basics, Sex by Design: The Betty Dobson Story and, of course, Sex for One. And visit her website, where her pioneering work continues with Carlin Ross.
