Last Tango in Paris – 50 years later!

Non-consensual sex is always rape.

Whether it’s depicted in an erotic and infamous movie like Last Tango in Paris (1972) or more recently in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) or  The Handmaid’s Tale, it always reminds us of how vulnerable women are. Of course, in movies it’s acting but back in 1972 the butter-rape scene was too close to reality because the scene with a stick of butter to simulate sex was not consensual.

Last Tango in Paris was one of director Bertolucci’s best and most contentious film, starring mega-movie star, Marlon Brando.  The sex scene became more controversial recently then when the film was first released because Bertolucci admitted, in 2013 that the scene was not consensual in that the scene was created without the knowledge of 19 year-old co-star Maria Schneider. He claimed he “wanted her reaction as a girl, not as an actress.” He admitted he didn’t tell her the detail of the butter used as a lubricant. In 2007, Maria Schneider said she felt humiliated and “a little raped.” She added, “Marlon said to me, `Maria, don’t worry, it’s just a movie’.”

Movie, no movie. Acting, no acting. With or without butter. Without a woman’s consent, non-consensual sex is a crime.

Consensual sex is the natural order of things

Much has changed in the 50 years since the making of the Last Tango in Paris and parts of the law have been strengthened to help protect women from non-consensual sex.

Consent means actively agreeing to be sexual with someone. Consent lets someone know that sex is wanted. Sexual activity without consent is rape or sexual assault.

You get the final say over what happens with your body. It doesn’t matter if you’ve hooked up before or even if you said yes earlier and then changed your mind. You’re allowed to say “stop” at any time.
